Joe’s House is a non-profit organization that serves both the hospital staff and cancer patients.  Founded in 2003, Joe’s House was conceived after Ann Calahan’s first husband, Joe Warnecke, died of cancer.  Joe battled the disease for six years. During those six years, Ann and Joe had difficulty finding appropriate accommodations in unfamiliar cities. Ann vowed to correct this problem.  After Joe's death Ann conceived the idea of a non-profit organization that would specialize in accommodations for traveling cancer patients. Today, Ann is the president of Joe’s House.

Fighting cancer takes energy and determination. The focus of patients, friends and families should be on beating this disease and not worrying about a place to stay. Our goal is to help ease that burden.

The Need:

Every day more than 3,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer. Many must travel to cancer centers specializing in their particular treatment needs. Combined with the millions who are already fighting this disease, it means tens of thousands of cancer patients every day throughout the United States are looking for a suitable place to stay.

Cancer patients who must travel for treatment accompanied by family and friends, must research a wide variety of accommodations in unfamiliar cities. Further, medical personnel who generously assist their patients in this search spend an inordinate and tedious amount of time researching and reserving accommodations thereby taking time away from their other duties.

Today, the search for accommodations in which to stay during treatment periods can be a cumbersome task. Methods include word-of-mouth recommendations, trial and error, using overworked hospital staff, and recommendations from friends. Additional complexities include locating housing conveniently near treatment facilities and pinpointing those that provide special considerations, services, and prices. The vision of Joe's House is to centralize the various lodging options and to streamline the reservations process.

Our repository of lodging information provides a centralized list of appropriate housing. As a result, the laborious and worrisome task of phoning, researching and qualifying for a place to stay is eliminated for patients, families, and their healthcare professionals. Joe's House works with hotels and other lodging facilities to centralize inventory and provide additional services to cancer patients where necessary.

Joe's House website lists accommodations that cater to cancer patients, their families, and caregivers. Some of our lodging options accept any patient regardless of illness. Many of our lodging facilities offer online booking links, look for the online check mark next to the facility on the lodging query page.
